Basement Improvements
If you are in the process of renovating your basement, be it to bring it up to code so that it can be a living space or simply so you can enjoy it as a recreational room, there are a number of things you can do besides replacing your basement door. Bilco, which manufactures some of the best basement doors, also offers a variety of basement additions. Here are some that may be offered by a number of different manufacturers.
Window Wells
Many people avoid using their basement to the full potential because of a lack of sunlight and ventilation. A window well could solve this problem Window wells are interlocking, u-shaped plastic pieces that can be stacked in any number to any height that create a space for a window to be put into a basement wall. All that must be done is for a whole to be dug, the well put into place, soil returned around the well, and a window installed. They can even be manufactured with window boxes and other containers for plants to liven up the appearance of your window well.
Basement Window Grates
If you have a small, regular basement window or a large-scale window well, you may want the freedom of leaving your basement window open for long periods of time without debris constantly falling into the well. A steel window grate will keep most leaves, sticks and animals out of your window. It is simply installed over the top of your window well, even with the ground.
Window Covers
In the winter or during inclement weather, you might feel that your basement and windows are at risk if you have a window well installed. However, a window cover will still allow natural light into your basement. It is installed in much the same way as a window grate, and is usually made from transparent Plexiglas.
